When you’re ready to hit the record button, what comes next?

With millions of podcasts and billions of episodes available, a podcast is still an effective and exciting way to show up for your business. Ensuring the quality is good isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating an experience for your listening audience. The good news is that a podcast recording doesn’t have to be perfect the first time. Editing decisions include removing distractions, stumbling, unfavorable sounds, or gaps creating soundwaves of conversations that are appealing.

Outsourcing

Sound quality is key. When it comes to editing, the idea of exporting a recording file might sound intimidating. The choice between handling editing in-house (DIY) and hiring professional podcast editors often comes down to expertise.  DIY editing requires an investment of time and energy. Professionals easily understand the nuances of a higher-quality finished product. Outsourcing frees up time for content creation. However, editing on your own can be a cost-effective strategy as you attempt to reach wider audiences and maintain a high-quality standard in both content and production. The decision to outsource depends on your specific needs and available resources. There’s a range of options–from free to low-cost and premium–options that all work. Don’t hesitate to ask for referrals as you choose.

Recording Equipment

Investing in professional-grade equipment such as microphones and headphones may not be a requirement. While investing in professional equipment can enhance the quality of a podcast, it’s not a prerequisite for getting started. With some creativity and resourcefulness, your engaging content is the real secret. With the technology of smartphones, you don’t need to invest in professional-grade equipment to get started. Most smartphones have built-in microphones that are podcast quality. They can capture clear crisp audio making them a convenient and cost-effective choice for beginners. If outsourcing isn’t the best option for you right now, sticking with recording devices that you’re familiar with is the best option when getting started.

Editing Software

Once you have recorded your podcast, you’ll need editing software to put it all together. There are many options available, from free programs like Audacity to more advanced paid software like Adobe Audition. The key is finding one that is user-friendly and allows you to edit your audio in a way that enhances the overall quality of your podcast for your budget. Editing software provides additional functions such as special effects and noise reduction in order to produce a polished and professional podcast episode for your audience.

Hosting Platform

Once an episode is recorded and edited, it needs to be hosted on a platform so it can be distributed to various listening platforms. After recording your podcast, a file is created in a .mp3 or a .mp4 format. This file is then exported into a hosting platform creating an RSS file. When you upload your episode to a podcast hosting platform, the platform automatically generates an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. The RSS feed is a standardized format that podcast directories understand. By providing an RSS feed, you make your podcast accessible to a broad audience through various podcasting platforms and apps, increasing its reach and potential listenership.
