Perhaps this is more of a public service announcement for this next stage in life. As a mother of young kids, it can be quite challenging to manage responsibilities that come with entrepreneurship. However, after your not-so-young kids head off to college, this change offers you an opportunity for new growth. For many mothers, this change results in the newfound motivation to tap into the world of entrepreneurship. For entrepreneur moms, otherwise known as mompreneurs, the idea of establishing your own business is a dream worth striving for.

Empty Nest Syndrome may feel more of a phenomenon than a clinical condition. It’s a feeling of loss, along with grief. Parents experience these feelings and more when their last adult child moves out. If you’re experiencing anxiety as you approach this stage, you’re not alone.

The woman who establishes and runs her own business and also raises her children at the same time, she’s called a ‘mompreneur‘. These are working women who are an inspiration for us all because bringing up kids is a full-time job in itself. When mothers with children are earning a living, they face quite a large number of challenges.

It’s just like managing two jobs at a time. These multitaskers handle both business and responsibilities of being full-time mommies–with no shame. They balance their home-based business and a  family life’s hectic routine, which is not possible without dedication, a huge amount of energy and confidence–the strong belief of knowing everything is possible.

However, this transition in life can be difficult for you as you let them go. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but a change that can catch you off guard when life is at its best for your young adult.

My point here today is it’s inevitable that we are going to experience some of the effects of an empty nest as mompreneurs. There are some consequences, but we can cope with this inevitable change. It’s a time to look for better opportunities in this next stage of life.

  1. What to Expect from an Empty Nest?

Change as we get older doesn’t have to be stressful. It may not feel motivating if you’re not willing to accept the change in your roles. Both full-time moms and mompreneurs experience these emotions. A mother’s natural instinct of care may make them worried about their child’s health, as well as safety. The sense of loss can create anxiety. This change may even lead to an identity crisis.  This awareness for mental health may cause depression.

  1. Look for the Silver Lining

An empty nest allows independence for both the young adult and the parent. The new experience of quiet changes the dynamic in the air. Life together as the unit known for almost two decades no longer exists. The relationship is still there, but the dynamic is new. It’s a new different connection.

Mompreneurs are now allowed to explore new interests. They can fulfill their forgotten dreams. The dreams they left behind while owning parenthood.

  1. Do Not Hesitate to Seek Help

Statistics say, about one in three entrepreneurs in the U.S. are mothers. The number of women entrepreneurs is growing twice as fast as men, which is interesting. Again, there’s no need to feel alone.

An empty nest allowed me to find my confidence and forge forward even more being an entrepreneur. All the new dynamics opened roads that I never imagined with my new found freedom and the new relationship I’ve built with myself.

Change is overwhelming. Do share your feelings with loved ones. Reach out to other moms. Accepting this new role is healing when you can share your similar journeys. But never compare. Self-judgement is mentally exhausting.

And, when it is about seeking what’s next in finding your freedom, I’ll be your go-to person.
