The Middle Is Where It Works
Every project has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The beginning is exciting. The end is satisfying. The middle is where most of us quit.
The middle is unglamorous. The novelty has worn off. The results have not arrived yet. You are doing the same work you were doing last week, and it is hard to tell whether any of it is making a difference.
This is where the next idea starts to look very appealing.
And this is exactly where the real work happens.
The middle is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign that you are actually doing it.
Every result worth having passes through a stretch where nothing seems to be happening. Trust is being built, but slowly. Skills are improving, but quietly. Relationships are forming, but out of sight. The progress is real long before it becomes visible.
Knowing that does not make the middle exciting. It does make it easier to stay. When you understand that the dull stretch is part of the process, you stop reading it as failure and start reading it as a stage.
I am in the middle of this month of writing myself. Some days the words come easily. Some days they do not. The commitment is to keep showing up either way.
Most people do not fail. They simply leave right before it starts working.
If you are in the middle of something right now, this is your reminder that the middle is where it works.
