The Relationship Between Food and Self
As a health coach, Jessica Guerrero has dedicated her career to helping women break free from the cycle of binge eating and emotional struggles with food. Through her own personal experiences, as well as working with countless clients, Jessica has gained invaluable insights into the complex relationship we often have with what we eat.
One of the core realizations Jessica shared is that our relationship with food is deeply intertwined with our relationship with ourselves. The habits, beliefs, and emotional patterns we’ve developed around eating are typically rooted in our upbringing and past experiences. As Jessica explained, “for so many of us, our food stories are that true relationship that we’ve built.” Undoing these ingrained patterns is possible, but requires a multi-faceted approach.
The Eating Freely Framework
The framework of Jessica’s Eating Freely program provides a helpful roadmap:
- Feed yourself properly. Jessica emphasized the importance of disentangling health from weight, and focusing on nourishing our bodies rather than restrictive dieting.
- Forgive yourself quickly. Recognizing that we all have slip-ups or moments of overindulgence, the key is to respond with self-compassion rather than shame.
- Focus on health, not weight. This shift in mindset can be profoundly transformative, as it allows us to tune into how our bodies feel rather than obsessing over the number on the scale.
The Role of Neuroscience and Resilience
Another crucial insight from Jessica was the role of neuroscience in understanding emotional eating. She explained that the brain’s wiring and lack of willpower are major factors, which is why approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and self-compassion are so important in creating lasting change. Jessica also highlighted the unique challenges that arise during holidays and social gatherings, where food and alcohol can be major triggers. Her advice? Cultivate awareness of your personal triggers, create a plan for how to respond mindfully, and give yourself permission to take space if needed.
Perhaps most inspiring was Jessica’s reflection on the parallels between the emotional journey of entrepreneurship and the journey of healing our relationship with food. Both require immense mental resilience, the willingness to ask for help, and a commitment to self-compassion. As Jessica eloquently stated, “you deserve to be liberated from” the time and energy we’ve spent worrying about food and our bodies. With the right support and mindset shifts, true food freedom is possible. Jessica’s wisdom and personal experiences serve as a powerful reminder that we all have the capacity to reclaim a healthy, joyful relationship with what we eat.
